It's the small things on campus that count

By EricDuma - Apr 15, 2026, 12:19 PM

I like the evenings on campus when it rains. My roommate and I are just standing at our desks. Then, the fabric of the sky tears open and droplets start descending. I sit by the window and let the grains of water dance along my arms. I watch as the water indiscriminately hugs this campus: people, buildings, cats. Shadows start creeping and everything unfolds like a dance. The magic lasts less than 5 minutes. Back to work! I like the chilly mornings in April, when the greenery around the pond is reborn. All is quiet and serene. The wind plays with my freshly washed hair, teasing me as I embrace the silence. There is a beautiful scent that takes me back to the past, to me relaxing on a hill nearby my grandparents’ village farm. You don’t get much time to appreciate these moments on campus, so make sure you do when you find the opportunity, I like drinking my tea and sitting down in the hallway, by the window. People look confused at me while they pass, but I am enjoying the moment. In high school, my ritual was to wake up, prepare coffee for everyone, feed the cat, then enjoy my coffee on my favourite armchair by the window. My cat finishes eating her food (glutton!) and sits beside the window that I open every morning for her. We both enjoy this ritual in silence. While I don’t have my armchair, my cat, nor my favourite coffee, I continue this habit here on campus. I know that my mom is temporarily filling my role as I am writing. I like the cafeteria, not because I think the food is amazing, but because I am hungry most of the time and too lazy to cook or wait for 外卖. Breakfast is a delight.油条 reminds me of the Hungarian fried dough that I would eat at every town fair. There are new and old experiences that intertwine on this campus! You cannot move forward without leaving something in the past, so I think this is a fair equilibrium. I like it when you let me spend time with you…
